SONAR spotlight: The Roots

With the summer fast approaching, it seems like an appropriate time to get warmed up (no pun intended) for SONAR, Barcelona. With this in mind, I will focus on a few of the acts on this year’s line-up.

Usually you save the best for last, but exceptions have to be made every so often. The Roots are my favourite band (see http://everything-ecstatic.tumblr.com/post/22317854156) and as they now hold down a decent day job, a live set has become more of a rarity and makes their appearance at Sonar very special indeed.

I remember when I first saw them live. It’s the one time I’ve arrived early at a show to get a place on the front row barrier. I seriously lucked out: dead center, Blackthought killing it and ?uestlove an Hub (back in the day) with extended solos. What makes The Roots great is that every live show is different. Since I last saw them, they’e released several albums and the band setup’s changed. But one thing’s for sure: come headline time at Sonar, we’re in for one hell of a show.
